
# Bluetooth UART

## Step 1. Add the Serial Port Profile on the Pi

```bash
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.bluez.service
```

Add the compatibility flag, ' -C', at the end of the 'ExecStart=' line. Add a new line after that to add the SP profile. The two lines should look like this:

```
ExecStart=/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd -C
ExecStartPost=/usr/bin/sdptool add SP
```

Save the file and reboot.

## Step 2. Pair and trust the DLC32

```bash
bluetoothctl
scan on
```

You'll see a number of Bluetooth device addresses; one should be labeled as your device. If your device needs to be put into 'discoverable' mode, read the manual and do that first.

```bash
pair <bdaddr>
trust <bdaddr>
```

You can now 'exit' from bluetoothctl.

## Step 3. Build rfcomm service

```bash
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/rfcomm.service
```

Enter the following:

```
[Unit]
Description=RFCOMM service
After=bluetooth.service
Requires=bluetooth.service

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/rfcomm bind hci0 <bdaddr>

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
```

Enable that to start at boot time with:

```bash
sudo systemctl enable rfcomm
```

Reboot the pi:

```bash
sudo reboot
```

Connect to DuneWeaver webgui and verify rfcomm serial port visible and connects.

# Deploying Backend Code

## Overview
The Dune Weaver project supports two deployment modes for backend code: **Docker** and **Python script**. Docker deployment is recommended for supported devices with 64-bit operating systems.

### Supported Devices
- Raspberry Pi 3B, 4, 5
- Raspberry Pi Zero 2W
- Any PC/Mac (Python script only)

## Raspberry Pi Setup

### Initial Configuration
Users should employ the Raspberry Pi Imager to install the 64-bit OS. Key setup steps include:
- Selecting appropriate hardware and SD card
- Enabling SSH during advanced configuration
- Configuring Wi-Fi credentials
- Disabling WLAN Power Save via `raspi-config`
- Running system updates (`sudo apt update` and `sudo apt full-upgrade`)

Connect remotely using: `ssh pi@raspberrypi.local`

## Docker Deployment

### Installation
Execute these commands to install Docker:

```

Add user to Docker group to eliminate sudo requirement:
```bash
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
```

### Deployment via Docker Compose
Clone the repository and deploy:
```bash
git clone https://github.com/tuanchris/dune-weaver --single-branch
cd dune-weaver
docker compose up -d
```

Access the interface at `<raspberrypi_ip_address>:8080`

## Python Script Deployment

### Manual Execution
For devices without Docker support:
```bash
git clone https://github.com/tuanchris/dune-weaver --single-branch
cd dune-weaver
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
python main.py
```

### Systemd Service (Linux)
Create `/etc/systemd/system/dune-weaver.service` with appropriate paths, then:
```bash
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable dune-weaver
sudo systemctl start dune-weaver
```

### Windows Execution
Activate the virtual environment using `.venv\Scripts\activate.bat` and install from `requirements-nonrpi.txt`

## Web Interface Access
- Local computer: `localhost:8080`
- Raspberry Pi: `raspberrypi.local:8080` or `<ip_address>:8080`

## UART Configuration
Modify `/boot/firmware/config.txt` with specific overlays and run `raspi-config` Interface Options → Serial Port settings.

**Critical requirement**: Establish shared ground connection between Raspberry Pi and DLC32 device.

## Troubleshooting
Check Docker logs using: `docker compose logs -f`

# Dune Weaver Pro Assembly Instructions

## Assembly Steps

1. **Assemble the IKEA leg upside down**

2. **Add the base and secure the base aligner underneath with 4 M4x15mm self-tapping wood screws**

3. **Connect the motor cable, add the motors and secure** the motors to the holder with 4 M3x10mm machine screw for each motor. Secure the motor with the aligner to the base with 2 M4x15mm self-tapping wood screws for each motor.

4. **Add the bearing to the outer bearing holder.** Secure with M4 set screws or scale the model for a tight press fit. You can also use a dab of glue to hold the bearing in place.

5. **Add the inner bearing to the angular gear and glue it in place.** Wait for the glue to completely dry.

6. **Press fit the angular gear to the bearing.** Add set screws or glue to secure it in place. Make sure that the inner bearing moves when the angular gear moves.

7. **Add the assembly to the base and secure with 4 M4x15mm self tapping screws.**

8. **Add the radial arm and the inner spur gear**

9. **Secure the Raspberry Pi 2W** (with usb cabled attached). Then secure the dlc32 board on top of the usb cable. Test electronics before proceeding with wiring.

10. **After completing wiring, install the electronics cover**

11. **Trace and cut out the EVA** to the shape of the wooden base. Add minimal glue if EVA foam curls.

13. **Assemble the enclosure around the wooden sand bed**

14. **Optional: Caulk the bottom of the sand bed to prevent sand from escaping**

15. **Add approximately 1.4kg of sand and the magnetic ball.** Sand should cover about 25% of the magnetic ball height. Install the LEDs and solder connections.

## Wiring

### Pi Zero 2W and DLC32 Connection

- **Add the Pi Zero 2W and wire to the DLC32.** If using WLED (deprecated; use DW LEDs instead), attach ESP32 as well.

- **USB Connection Options:**
  - Use USB-a to micro USB adapter to connect dlc32 to Pi (skip next step)
  - Alternatively, set up UART over pins following [additional instructions](/docs/deploying-backend#uart-configuration)

- **Set the 3 switches under the motor drivers to off for both axes**

- **Adjust Vref values** using the [provided instructions](/docs/setting-vref).

### Power Supply

- Single 12V 5A supply powers everything
- Current requirements depend on LED choice
- Example: 12V WS2815 60 LEDs/m
- Higher LED density may require increased current capacity

### Connection Notes

- Use Dupont wires for Pi Zero 2W and ESP32 board (prone to issues; consider soldering after testing)
- Confirm all electronics function before final assembly

### Power Cable Installation

- Connect power cable to female 12V plug
- Run power wires through the steel tube

# Mini Pro Assembly Instructions

## Printing Instructions

- Everything can be printed out of PLA. If you prefer, you can print the gears with PETG, but avoid mixing and matching materials for moving parts (e.g., a radial arm in PLA, a spur gear in PETG).
- Save the magnet cup and the sand bed for last because you may have to scale this part to fit your particular setup.
- Print the acrylic holder and test fit for your bowl. I've seen reports of varying sizes for the bowl. If yours don't fit, try a different size from the Patreon page. If you still cannot find a good fit, message me on Discord and I'd love to make adjustments for you.
- If you're in Europe, you'd have to print the 250mm OD version for the acrylic holder (I heard that it's hard to find 10-inch acrylic over there).
- If you have a printer bed bigger than 256mm³, you can also print the acrylic holder in 1 piece.

## 28BYJ-48 Version

For the 28BYJ-48 version, print these parts differently. The rest of the parts use the standard files.

## Assembly Instructions

- Start by assembling the electronics and make sure that everything works before mounting them in the bowl.
- Test fit your bearing to the motor holder and the big angular gear. If needed, add threaded inserts and use M3 set screws (or short screws).
- Attach the motor wires, sit the two motors in their slots (label the wires so you know what cable is for what axis). Add the motor holder and secure it with 4 M3 screws (corners). You can also secure the motor to the holder, but it's optional.

- Flip the motor base around and secure the DLC32 to the motor base using 3 M3 screws. The orientation should match as follows.

- Add the Pi Zero 2W and wire them to the DLC32. If you still use WLED (not recommended anymore; check out [DW LEDs](/docs/dw-leds)), attach the ESP32 as well. After that, secure the Pi and the ESP32 to the base using M3 screws.
- If you have a USB-a to micro USB adapter, simply skip this step and plug the dlc32 into the pi (not the power port). If not you can set up UART over pins. There are some additional steps as outlined in [Deploying Backend](/docs/deploying-backend#uart-configuration).
- Set the 3 switches under the motor drivers to off for both axes.
- Adjust Vref values using the instructions in [Setting VREF](/docs/setting-vref).
- Add connector for the LED. Make sure the radial arm does not get caught with anything.

- Secure the base to the base holder with M3 screws.

- Assemble the angular gear like this. Depending on the fit, you may want to add some glue so the radial arm won't rotate around.

- Add the angular gear, radial arm and two spur gears (the longer one in the center).

- Add the LED strip to the sand bed. You should have a connector here so you can easily take off the base. LED strips usually come with both female and male connectors. On the other end, you can use a heat-shrink tube or your preferred method to connect to the DuPont wires.
- Add the Eva foam to the sand bed, secure it in place using double-sided tape. Don't overlap any tape sections.

- Test fit your two pieces of acrylic holder to the top of the wooden bowl first. The ring should sit flush with the top of the bowl. Next, add the acrylic in place. Everything should fit nicely. Please reach out to me in Discord if you have any problems and I can provide some adjustments.
- Glue (hot or instant) the acrylic holder to the sand bed. If your acrylic holder is printed in two segments, use electrical tape (preferably on the underside) to prevent light leak. You may also want to add some super glue to secure the electrical tape in place.

- Cut out a small section of the acrylic holder for the LED wires to come through.

- Drill a hole through the wooden base and add a female-to-male DC cable. Make sure that the power cable can connect fully and there's current. Secure the female side with hot glue.

- Use the drill template as a guide at the bottom (thanks, Bill, for the idea), drill two holes to secure the base in place. You can also use thin two-sided tape or other adhesive here. Please be mindful that we don't have a lot of clearance height. Use M3 or M4 10mm wood screws to secure the base holder to the bowl. Make sure that the base holder is level with the bottom of the bowl.

- Add the motor assembly and secure in place.

- Now, you want to measure the distance from the top of the magnet ring to the top of the bowl in various places (center, fully extended in the four posts' directions). If there are too many discrepancies here, you may have got yourself a bowl with an uneven bottom. Adding a couple of washers in some of the posts may help.

- The distance in the model is 30.4mm. The height of the sand bed + acrylic holder is 25.75, leaving us a gap of 4.65mm (from the top of the magnet cup to the bottom of the sand bed). The magnet cup depth is 6mm; therefore, we should have the magnet adapter of 6mm + 4.65mm - 1mm (tolerance) = 9.65mm. You'd want to swap out 4.65 with your smallest gap measured above to make sure we have enough clearance. You can then scale the height of the adapter in your slicer.
- Once I receive enough feedback here, I can standardize a couple of adapter sizes and include them in the model.

- The sand bed is thin enough that you can use a steel ball here instead of a magnet ball. Make sure that you don't use a ring magnet because the steel ball can be off-center. You also don't need to use big magnets like the DWP. I actually use 3 5x3mm magnets, and they work great.
- Once the adapter is printed, add it to the magnet cup, add the sand bed + acrylic holder, sand, magnet ball or steel ball, and acrylic. Enjoy the DWMP!

## Wiring

- If you have a USB-a to micro USB adapter, simply skip the blue and green wires and plug the dlc32 into the pi (not the power port). If not you can set up UART over pins. There are some additional steps as outlined in [Deploying Backend](/docs/deploying-backend#uart-configuration).

### 28BYJ-48 Wiring

- Wiring for the 28BYJ-48 is tricky because we have to supply power to 5 components. If you have some lying around, it's recommended to use two five-way Wago connectors for this. If not, you can always bundle the wires together. Use heat sink tube and/or solder to secure the connection.
- For the Dupont jumpers, these tend to loosen up the more you connect and disconnect them, so avoid doing that. Use hot glue to secure the connection if needed.
- For the motor signal wires, if you need to change direction, you should do that in the firmware file instead of physically moving the wires.

# Improving Pattern Performance and Reducing Noise

## Recommendations

Based on experimental observations:

### Material Choice
- **80–100 Mesh Sand**: "Use if you value a crisp, tactile line" but be prepared to manage wiggling through fine-tuning
- **Baking Soda**: Preferred if smoother performance matters more than tactile feedback

### Ball Choice
- **Magnetic Ball**: Highly recommended with thicker trays, though monitor wear over time
- **Faux Leather**: Apply to table surface to reduce ball wiggling
- **Optimization**: "It's a delicate balance—sometimes less sand or using a different ball can yield significant improvements"

Thick OMBONAD trays can cause performance issues including ball disconnection from magnetic force, particularly at the perimeter where "the radial arm bends downward due to gravity."

**Solutions:**
- Use thinner trays to maintain magnetic contact
- Pair thick trays with magnetic balls
- Adjust ball type to overcome magnetic force challenges

# Installing Microcontroller Firmware

## Overview
From v2.0 onward, Dune Weaver transitioned from custom firmware to FluidNC.

## FluidNC Installation (DW Mini, DW Pro, DW with DLC32)

**Installation Steps:**
1. Navigate to https://installer.fluidnc.com using Chrome
2. Select "Connect" and choose your Dune Weaver's serial port
3. Follow on-screen instructions (may require pressing/holding boot button)

**Version Requirements:**
- **DW Mini**: Use v3.8.3 (supports unipolar motors removed in later versions)
- **Mini Pro with 28BYJ-48 motors**: Use v3.8.3
- **Other configurations**: Can use latest version
- **DLC32 users**: Ensure switches 1, 2, 3 are OFF for both X and Y axes

**Wireless Options:**
- Bluetooth: Works immediately via serial connection
- WiFi: Implemented but not optimized; disabled by default

**Configuration Upload:**
After firmware installation, upload the corresponding config file from the `firmware` folder via File browser, then restart the board.

2. Manually copy grbl folder to Arduino libraries if needed

# Kiosk Mode

## Deprecated with Auto-play on boot

This feature has been superseded by the auto-play functionality released in v3.2.1. To disable the legacy system:

- If running: `sudo systemctl stop start-playlist.service`
- If inactive: `sudo systemctl disable start-playlist.service`

## Old Instructions

The original kiosk mode allowed a Dune Weaver device to run a preset playlist automatically at startup or after power loss without requiring WiFi connectivity.

###Setup start_playlist.py

1. SSH into the Pi (replace "pi" with your device name):
   ```bash
   ssh pi@raspberrypi.local
   ```

2. Create the script file:
   ```bash
   nano start_playlist.py
   ```

3. Add the provided Python code that monitors serial status and triggers playlist execution. The script checks device connectivity and initiates playback of the "kiosk" playlist with configurable pause times and shuffle settings.

4. Make the script executable and save to `/home/pi/start_playlist.py`

5. Create a systemd service file at `/etc/systemd/system/start-playlist.service` with appropriate startup configuration

6. Enable and start the service:
   ```bash
   sudo systemctl enable start-playlist.service
   sudo systemctl start start-playlist.service
   ```

### Configuring the "kiosk" Playlist via Web UI

1. Access the interface at `raspberrypi.local:8080`
2. Create a new playlist named "kiosk"
3. Add desired patterns to this playlist for automatic playback

### Configuring via SSH

Edit `playlists.json` directly to define the "kiosk" playlist with specific pattern files.

# Polar Kinematic 101

The creator references "Mark Rober's Sand Garden design" as an educational resource for understanding the polar kinematic mechanism. While the Dune Weaver uses a different implementation, "the principles are the same."

## Key Resource

The polar kinematic system uses two motors to control movement:

1. **Radial Motor (Rho)**: Controls the distance from the center
2. **Angular Motor (Theta)**: Controls the rotation angle

By coordinating these two movements, the system can draw complex patterns in the sand. The magnetic ball underneath follows the magnet attached to the carriage system.

# Setting VREF

## Set Vref for TMC2209 — Dune Weaver Table

A quick, safe procedure to set motor current on DW tables.

### TL;DR

- **Set Vref to 0.60 V.**
- Only raise if confirmed **step loss** after mechanical checks; **max 0.70 V**.
- **Clip the red lead** to the **VREF** pad; **hold the black probe on GND**. Adjust with a ceramic/plastic screwdriver while measuring.

### What is Vref (in one line)?

"Vref is the driver's reference voltage that sets motor current: higher = more torque & heat; lower = cooler & quieter."

### Safety

- **Power down** before attaching/removing the red clip.
- **Use a small insulated alligator/mini‑grabber on the _red_ lead to the VREF pad**—make sure it touches **only that pad**.
- **Hold** the **black** probe on a solid **GND** point (PSU − or controller GND); keep a steady hand.
- Keep axes **idle** while measuring/adjusting.

### Where to Probe

- **Red lead (clip):** vref adjustment screw. Use an alligator clip to clip to a screwdriver so you can measure and adjust simultaneously
- **Black probe (hand‑held):** any **GND** pad or PSU −.

### Procedure

1. **Power off.** Clip **red** lead to **VREF**. Position the **black** probe on **GND**.
2. **Power on.** Keep the black probe on GND to read Vref.
3. Using a metal screwdriver, **adjust while measuring** (tiny turns: **CW = up**, **CCW = down**) to **0.60 V**.
4. **Power off.** Remove the **red** clip; run a slow test pattern.

### Tuning

- If you still get stalls/step loss: **0.65 V → test → 0.70 V (hard max)**.
- Too low: skips, chattering, weak hold.
- Too high: hot drivers/motors, harsh sound, thermal shutdown.

### Before Raising Vref, Check

- Smooth mechanics (no binding); rails/bearings aligned.
- Belt tension, pulley grub‑screws on shaft flat.
- PSU voltage stable; connectors seated.

# Troubleshooting

## Common Troubleshooting Steps

The wiki provides systematic guidance for addressing sand table issues:

### 1. Power Verification
"Use a multimeter to check the power supply" and confirm voltage levels match component specifications (ESP32, Arduino, motor drivers, etc.).

### 2. Wiring Inspection
Verify all connections follow the circuit diagram precisely, checking for loose or misplaced wires throughout the assembly.

### 3. Microcontroller Firmware
Confirm successful firmware installation on the microcontroller and consider re-uploading if the device malfunctions.

### 4. Dupont Wire Assessment
"Dupont wires are known to be unreliable" — replace suspicious connections and test wire security in ports by gentle tugging.

### 5. Motor Direction Correction
- **CNC Shield (Arduino UNO)**: Reverse the motor cable at the shield
- **ESP32**: Swap IN1 with IN3 (or IN2 with IN4) in stepper motor wiring to reverse rotation direction

### 6. Gear Maintenance
Apply lubricant to stuck or rough-moving gears and remove any dirt or debris obstructing the mechanism.

# Updating Software

## V3 update

Before following the steps below, you may have to do:

```bash
git fetch origin
git reset --hard origin/main
```

It's also a good idea to clear browser cache (cmd/ctrl + shift + r on Chrome)

## Docker Deployment

To update the software, run the following commands:

```bash
cd dune-weaver
git pull origin main
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d
```

**Notes:**

- If you have another docker container running on port `8080`, you won't be able to start the service. You can list docker services you have running with:
  ```bash
  docker ps
  ```
  To stop all running containers, use:
  ```bash
  docker stop $(docker ps -a -q)
  ```

- Currently, we only support running Docker for Raspberry Pi (3, 4, 5) and Zero 2W, running a 64-bit operating system. Consider using the Python script method if you're on an older Pi or a 32-bit system.

## Python Script

If you are using the Python script method, ensure that the current backend code is not running before updating.

### Stop the Running Service

If you have set up the script to run as a systemd service, stop it first:

```bash
sudo systemctl stop dune-weaver
```

### Update and Restart the Script

```bash
cd dune-weaver
pip install -r requirements.txt
git pull
python main.py
```

After updating, restart the systemd service:

```bash

# V2.0 Update

## Update Summary

The version 2.0 release represents a significant architectural shift. The project "moved away from using custom firmware written in C++ in favor of using Fluidnc firmware." The transition affects different hardware configurations differently:

- **Dune Weaver Pro and DLC32 board variants**: Latest Fluidnc version
- **CNC Shield + Arduino Uno setup**: Grbl firmware
- **Mini Dune Weaver**: Fluidnc version 3.8.3

### Rationale

The developers chose Fluidnc to "simplify our codebase and enjoy many advantages that the fluidnc firmware has to offer (optimized batches, wireless connections, etc.)." Since Fluidnc derives from Grbl, the update maintains backward compatibility for Arduino Uno users, though the update process differs.

### Important Note on Spirograph Mode

Users with enclosed Ombonad versions should defer the update if they wish to retain spirograph functionality. This feature was part of the custom firmware and requires conversion to software form before migration.

# Wiring

## Pi/Computer Connection

Your backend code will be deployed in a Raspberry Pi or on your computer. You would then connect the ESP32, Arduino Uno, or DLC32 to the Pi or Computer via USB. Wireless connection (Bluetooth and Wifi) is possible (not yet implemented in the main branch) but may reduce performance.

## Motor Driver Configurations

### CNC Shield + TMC2209

This is one of the most common configurations. The TMC2209 stepper drivers provide:
- Silent operation (StealthChop mode)
- Higher current capacity
- Better heat dissipation

### Common Wiring Issue

I've heard reports that sometimes, the motor wires may be different. For example, instead of red, **blue, green,** black, the wires may go red, **green, blue,** black. If you face this problem, you need to swap the two middle cables around.

**Important**: Make sure the motor wire colors match the expected sequence. If your motors don't work correctly, try swapping the middle two wires.

### CNC Shield + DRV8825

An alternative stepper driver configuration. The DRV8825 provides:
- Reliable performance
- Good torque
- Simpler configuration

## Overview

Dune-Weaver integrates with WLED, an open-source firmware for ESP8266/ESP32-based LED controllers, enabling automation of lighting effects. A separate ESP32 is required to control addressable LEDs.

## Installing WLED

1. Connect ESP32 board to computer via USB
2. Open [WLED Web Installer](https://install.wled.me/) in Google Chrome or Edge
3. Click "Install", select your ESP32 device, and follow instructions

## Setting up WLED Wi-Fi

1. Use WiFi device to connect to access point WLED-AP with password `wled1234`
2. Click Config (gear) icon and select "Wifi Setup"
3. Enter WiFi network name and password
4. Optionally change mDNS address for WLED module
5. Click "Save & Connect"
6. Reconnect device to home WiFi network
7. Check router's device list for WLED IP address (or use WLED Native app)
8. Configure static IP via router for consistent connectivity after reboots

## Wiring

- ESP32 can be powered via USB or 3.3V/5V pins
- For addressable LEDs, verify LED power input requirements (12V or 5V)
- Typically requires separate power supply for LEDs
- Share a ground pin between ESP32 and LED system
